David Byrne Biography

Byrne had already learned to play the guitar, accordion, and violin before entering high school. He was rejected from his middle school choir because he was too withdrawn and off-key.

He had a strong interest in music since a young age. His parents claim that he began playing his phonograph at the age of three and learned to play the harmonica at the age of five.

David’s father modified a reel-to-reel tape recorder with his electrical engineering skills so that he could make multitrack recordings.

Byrne attended Lansdowne High School in Baltimore County’s southwest. He began his musical career in a high school band called Revelation, then as one half of the duo Bizadi with Marc Kehoe between 1971 and 1972.

Their repertoire mainly consisted of songs like “April Showers,” “96 Tears,” “Dancing on the Ceiling,” and Frank Sinatra songs. Byrne dropped out of the Rhode Island School of Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

In 1973, he returned to Providence and formed the Artistics with fellow RISD student Chris Frantz.

In 1974, the band disbanded. Byrne moved to New York City in May of that year, and Frantz and his girlfriend Tina Weymouth followed in September.

Weymouth learned to play the bass guitar after Byrne and Frantz were unable to find a bass player in New York for nearly two years. They were thinking about starting a band while working day jobs in late 1974.

They were practicing and playing together by January 1975, while still working regular day jobs. They formed the band Talking Heads and performed their first show in June.

In May 1976, Byrne quit his day job, and the three-piece band signed with Sire Records in November. Byrne was the band’s youngest member. Jerry Harrison, formerly of The Modern Lovers, joined the band in 1977 as a multi-instrumentalist.

The band achieved critical and commercial success with eight studio albums. Four albums were certified gold (500,000 sales) and two others were certified double-platinum (2 million in sales).

During his time in the band, David Byrne worked on side projects, including a collaboration with Brian Eno on the album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, which received critical acclaim for its early use of analogue sampling and found sounds.

Following this release, Byrne concentrated on Talking Heads. In early 2006, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was re-released to commemorate its 25th anniversary, with new bonus tracks.

In keeping with the original album’s spirit, the stems for two of the songs’ component tracks were released under Creative Commons licenses, and a remix contest website was launched.

Byrne collaborated with choreographer Twyla Tharp in 1981, scoring music he wrote for his album The Catherine Wheel for a ballet of the same name, which featured unusual rhythms and lyrics. The Catherine Wheel was staged on Broadway the same year.

In 1990, David Byrne founded the world music record label Luaka Bop. It was founded to release Latin American compilations, but it has since expanded to include music from Cuba, Africa, the Far East, and beyond, featuring artists such as Cornershop, Os Mutantes, Los De Abajo, Jim White, Zap Mama, Tom Zé, Los Amigos Invisibles, and King Changó.
