Chauvin faced a jury in the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District Court at the beginning of 2021 when he was charged with unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter of Floyd.

He was found guilty of the counts on April 20. He was sentenced to 22+1⁄2 years in jail on June 25 (minus the 199 days he had already served). After 15 years or two-thirds of his sentence, he could be eligible for supervised release based on things like good behavior.

Both the US Supreme Court and the Minnesota Supreme Court rejected requests for review. Chauvin entered a guilty plea to federal charges in late 2021, acknowledging that he had violated Floyd’s civil rights by employing excessive force and neglecting his critical medical requirements.

Chauvin simultaneously entered a guilty plea to the 2017 civil rights violation of employing excessive force against a 14-year-old kid. For breaching Floyd’s civil rights, Chauvin received a 21-year prison sentence in the middle of 2022. The terms of the state and federal laws must be served concurrently.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections indicates that December 10, 2035, is when Chauvin is expected to be released from the state prison. Chauvin is anticipated to be released from jail in 2038 regarding the federal allegations.
