Aubrey Drake Graham (born October 24, 1986) is a Canadian rapper and singer better known as Drake. Drake, a prominent character in modern popular music, is credited with popularising singing and R&B tendencies in hip-hop.

Following his success as Jimmy Brooks in the CTV adolescent drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-08), he embarked on a singing career in 2006, releasing his debut mixtape Room for Improvement in February of that year. Dennis Graham, his father, is an African-American Catholic drummer from Memphis who has previously performed with country performer Jerry Lee Lewis. Sandra “Sandi” Graham, his mother, is a Canadian Ashkenazi Jew who worked as an English teacher and florist. Sandra was in the audience when Graham performed at Club Bluenote in Toronto. Drake is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, with the former descended from Graham. He attended a Jewish day school and got a bar mitzvah in his teens.

Drake was five years old when his parents divorced. He and his mother remained in Toronto after the divorce; his father went to Memphis, where he was detained for several years on drug-related charges. Graham remained in the United States until Drake was in his early twenties due to financial constraints and legal concerns. Graham would travel to Toronto and bring Drake to Memphis every summer before his incarceration. Graham alleged in an interview that Drake’s claims of being an absent parent were embellishments designed to sell records, something Drake categorically disputes.
