In 1986, Stevens and a group of lifelong friends, including Rob Morrow, Nicole Burdette, Pippin Parker, Charles Landry, Nancy Travis, and Ned Eisenberg, co-founded the Naked Angels Theater Company.

The movie Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, was co-directed by him and his longtime partner Alexis Bloom. The movie served as a memorial for both the mother and daughter, who died in the same year. Stevens was good friends with both of them.
