Born on December 8, 1941, he holds the distinction of being the first and one of only two men to have ever scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final. This historic achievement occurred during the 1966 World Cup when England secured a memorable 4–2 victory over West Germany at Wembley Stadium.
Geoff Hurst commenced his football journey with West Ham United, where he netted an impressive 242 goals in 500 appearances for the first team. His time at West Ham was marked by triumphs, including winning the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965. In 1972, he was transferred to Stoke City for a fee of £80,000. Over three seasons with Stoke, he clinched the Watney Cup in 1973.
Following his stint in the Football League, Hurst embarked on football adventures in Ireland, playing for Cork Celtic, and in the USA, representing the Seattle Sounders. He later returned to England to manage the non-league club Telford United. Additionally, he contributed to coaching within the England setup and served as the manager of Chelsea from 1979 to 1981. Subsequently, Hurst ventured into coaching with Kuwait SC before shifting his focus to his business interests.
In total, Geoff Hurst amassed 24 goals in 49 appearances for the England national team. Beyond his iconic 1966 World Cup win, he also participated in UEFA Euro 1968 and the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Notably, Hurst briefly explored cricket, making a single appearance for Essex in 1962 before dedicating himself entirely to football. Although his cricket debut was less successful, he played for the Essex Second XI multiple times between 1962 and 1964, often taking on the role of a wicket-keeper.
During his early years, under his father’s management of the club, Hurst even played once for Halstead Town reserves when he was approximately 14 years old.
In November 2020, Hurst made a significant gesture by pledging to donate his brain for research into dementia after his passing. This decision was prompted by the tragic experiences of several of his 1966 World Cup-winning teammates, including Jack Charlton, Martin Peters, Ray Wilson, and Nobby Stiles, who suffered from the disease. Furthermore, it came in the wake of Bobby Charlton’s dementia diagnosis.
During his time with Stoke City F.C., Hurst also owned the Royal Oak Inn in Eccleshall.
