Geraint Davies grew up in Cardiff and attended Llanishen High School. He went on to study Mathematics and later Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Jesus College, Oxford, where he held the position of Junior Common Room President.

His professional journey began in 1982 when he joined Unilever as a Group Product Manager before transitioning to Colgate-Palmolive Ltd. as Marketing Manager. Davies later ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing his own companies, including Pure Crete Ltd. and Equity Creative Ltd.

Davies actively engaged in the Labour Party starting from 1982, serving as Assistant Secretary for Croydon North East Labour Party and Chair of Croydon Central Constituency Labour Party. He was a member of the Association of Scientific, Technical, and Managerial Staffs and subsequently joined the Manufacturing, Science, and Finance Union.

Davies has been a member of the Co-operative Party since 1984 and joined the GMB union in 1985. In 1989, he became the Director of Pure Crete Ltd, a notable “Green tour operator.”

In 1986, Davies was elected to the Croydon London Borough Council, representing the New Addington ward. He successfully retained his seat in 1990 and 1994 and assumed the role of Chairman of the Housing Committee after the Labour Party gained control of the Croydon London Borough Council in 1994.

Davies’s political influence expanded further when he was elected as the Leader of the Council in 1996, succeeding Mary Walker. However, he resigned from both the leadership role and his council seat in 1997. During his tenure, Davies also chaired the Housing Committee of the London Boroughs Association, the precursor to London Councils, from 1996 to 1997.

In his parliamentary career, Davies contested the safe Conservative seat of Croydon South in the 1987 general election, securing the third position. He then ran in the Croydon Central constituency in 1992, finishing as the runner-up.

However, in the 1997 general election, he triumphed in Croydon Central, overturning a Conservative majority of 9,650 and becoming its MP with a Labour majority of 3,897. In the 2005 election, Davies narrowly lost his seat to Conservative candidate Andrew Pelling by a margin of 75 votes.

Subsequently, Davies was selected as the Labour candidate for Swansea West after the retirement of Alan Williams, who had represented the constituency for 45 years. In the 2010 general election, he won with a majority of 504 votes and 34.7% of the vote share.

Davies continued to increase his majority in subsequent elections, securing a victory in the 2015 general election with a majority of 7,036 over the Conservatives, receiving 42.6% of the vote. In the 2017 general election, his majority expanded to 10,598, capturing a remarkable 59.8% share of the vote, the highest Labour vote in Swansea West’s history. However, in the 2019 election, his vote tally decreased to 18,493, which still accounted for 51.6% of the total vote.
