Prior to taking on the position of head coach at Platinum Stars in 2012, Johnson mostly served as an assistant coach and youth director for a number of South African clubs, including Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, and most recently Platinum Stars.

After leading Stars to a second-place PSL result in his first season as head coach, he joined SuperSport United to succeed departing Gavin Hunt. Johnson oversaw 39 SuperSport games from 2013 to 2014, averaging 1.36 points each contest.

He succeeded Joey Antipas as the head coach of AmaZulu, a newly promoted team in the Premier Soccer League, on August 8, 2017. Following a dismal start to the Club’s 2019–20 season—he managed just 2 points from 15 (first 5 games) and hadn’t won a game since April 2019—he was let go by AmaZulu in August 2019.

Johnson was announced as the new Black Leopards mentor on December 29, 2019, following Luc Eymael’s resignation from the team on December 27, 2019.
