Murphy had bright futures in football and cricket as a young man. He represented Australia at the national under-16 cricket tournament, state cricket for Victoria, and school cricket for Brighton Grammar.

Murphy played football for the Sandringham Dragons and Brighton Grammar. He decided to concentrate on football in July 2017, and he was considered a top-30 prospect for the 2017 AFL national draft.
