The Miami Heat selected Rice as the #4 overall choice in the 1989 NBA draft following his outstanding performance in the 1989 NCAA Tournament. At the time, the Heat were in their second season together after ranking worst in the NBA in points per game in 1988-1989.
Rice started 60 games as a rookie, averaging 13.6 points per game. However, the Heat only won 18 games that season. The following year, the team improved slightly, with Rice starting every game and scoring an average of 17.4 points per game.
