Graeme Souness children-Former Scottish footballer and manager, Graeme James Souness was born on May 6th, 1953 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Souness played for the neighborhood boys’ club North Merchiston when he was an adolescent.
Under Bill Nicholson, Souness started his professional career as an apprentice with Tottenham Hotspur.

He signed business documents in 1968 when he was 15 years old. The young Souness reportedly told Nicholson he was the best player at the club, frustrated at not being given first-team appearances.

Souness played in one first-team match for Spurs, coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Cup match. Souness represented the Montreal Olympique in the North American Soccer League during the summer of 1972.

He participated in 10 of his team’s 14 games, and for that season, he was selected to the league’s All-Star team.

Graeme Souness career

Souness succeeded Jock Wallace as the first player-manager of Rangers in April 1986 after joining from Sampdoria for a price of £300,000.

Souness and club chairman David Holmes launched a daring campaign to reclaim the footballing ascendancy Rangers had lost in recent years.

Rangers hadn’t won the league title since 1978, and all of Scotland’s league titles since then had gone to their archrivals Celtic and the burgeoning “New Firm” of Aberdeen and Dundee United. The campaign was initially funded by the club’s then-owner, Lawrence Marlborough.

With a number of significant signings from English clubs, what became known as the “Souness Revolution” had its start. This was significant because it broke the long-standing trend of Scotland’s best footballers playing in England.

Terry Butcher, the captain of Ipswich Town and a seasoned England international, and Chris Woods, England’s backup goalkeeper from Norwich City, were among his early acquisitions.

Rangers was given new life under Souness, and they swiftly took control of Scottish football. They won the League Cup and the Championship in his first season, 1986–1987, defeating Celtic 2-1 in the championship game.

Despite losing the league championship to Celtic, they defended the League Cup in 1987–88, defeating Aberdeen on penalties after extra time.

Even though Liverpool had won three league championships and two FA Cups in the previous five seasons and were still in the running for both trophies when Dalglish, a teammate of Souness’s at Liverpool, resigned as manager of the club in February 1991.

Following Dalglish’s abrupt resignation, long-time coach Ronnie Moran was appointed in interim command, but he was not interested in the position being filled permanently.

On April 16, Souness was named Liverpool’s manager after agreeing to a five-year contract, leaving Rangers with four games left in the season.

When Souness was appointed manager of Galatasaray in Turkey in June 1995, he once more managed to stir up a ruckus with local issues.

On April 24, 1996, after Galatasaray had defeated archrival Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Cup final, he nearly incited a riot by placing a sizable Galatasaray flag in the center of Fenerbahçe’s pitch.

Then Souness went back to England to take over as manager of Southampton, however after just one season he left due to disagreements with chairman Rupert Lowe.

Souness returned to Italy after his time at Southampton to take the coaching job at Torino. When he arrived, it was evident that the club’s owner would make all player-related decisions, and he would have no voice in those choices.

Joo Vale e Azevedo, the club’s new chairman, appointed Souness in November 1997 with the intention of restoring Benfica to its previous glory.

In March 2000, Souness rejoined the English league as Blackburn Rovers’ manager, and in his first full season, the club was promoted back to the Premier League.

After Sir Bobby Robson, 71, was fired a few games into the 2004–05 season, Souness departed Blackburn to take over as manager of Newcastle United.
