During his high school days, he played football for the Johnson County Trojans and this was from 1976 to 1979. His popularity grew when he was in his senior year when he rushed for 3,167 yards. This helped the Trojans win their first state championship.

In 1979, he won the first Dial Award as the nation’s top high school scholar-athlete. Walker participated in events ranging from the 100-yard dash to the shot put while running for the Trojans’ track and field team.
