Roy McGrath was later appointed by Governor Larry Hogan to be the next chief of staff after Matthew Clark stepped down.

Before McGrath’s role as chief of staff, he was Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O) of Maryland Environmental Service.

His other experience included being “senior advisor to the governor, deputy chief of staff, and liaison to the Maryland Board of Public Works.”

When he was appointed, Gov. Hogan said; “Roy McGrath is an experienced public and private sector leader with a proven track record of managing at every level of government and a passionate commitment to public service.

Roy has played a key role in our coronavirus response over the last three months, so his transition to the chief of staff will be seamless.”

McGrath started his work as a chief of staff on June 1, 2020, but resigned on August 17, 2020, following criticism over a severance package he received from the Maryland Environmental Service.

In March 2023, Law enforcement agencies launched a manhunt for Roy McGrath after he failed to appear in federal court Monday, March 13 for the start of his criminal trial on fraud and other charges.

McGrath was charged with wire fraud and embezzlement, having allegedly stolen $276,000 from the State of Maryland. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Well, Roy McGrath has died. He passed away on April 3, 2023.

How Did Roy McGrath Die?

Roy McGrath died on Monday, April 3, 2023, after a confrontation with the FBI near Knoxville, Tennessee.

He had been the subject of a 21-day manhunt launched after he failed to show up to federal court in Baltimore on March 13, 2023.

Roy McGrath suffered a gunshot wound and succumbed to injuries, lawyer Joseph Murtha said in an email.

However, it wasn’t clear whether the injury was self-inflicted or whether it occurred in an exchange of gunfire with FBI agents, Murtha added.
