‘I Have Already Penned Down My Resignation Letter’ – Pope Francis – The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has revealed that he has penned down his resignation letter.

When asked what would happen if a pope was suddenly unable to carry out his duties due to illness or an accident, the renowned religious figure made the remark in an interview with Spanish news outlet ABC.

He claims to have written the letter several years prior and delivered it to Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the previous Secretary of State for the Vatican, who resigned in 2013.

Former Popes Paul VI and Pius XII, according to Francis, had also written their letters of renunciation in the event of a permanent impairment.

Except for knee issues, Pope Francis appears to be in good health. Due to pain in his right knee, he frequently uses a wheelchair and can be seen doing so.

He is on record to have postponed a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan earlier this year after doctors warned him that if he didn’t agree to 20 more days of rest and therapy for his right knee, he might also have to forgo a later trip to Canada.

In his submission, Pope Francis said;

“I have already signed my renunciation. The Secretary of State at the time was Tarcisio Bertone. I signed it and said: ‘If I should become impaired for medical reasons or whatever, here is my renunciation.

I don’t know who Cardinal Bertone has given that letter to, but I handed it to him when he was the Secretary of State.”
