This Town

This Town is a BBC One television program. There are six sections to it. Paul Whittington directed the narrative, which Steven Knight wrote and developed. It was produced by Kudos and Nebulastar, with assistance from Mercury Studios of the Universal Music Group.

Kae Tempest and Dan Carey are the show’s composers. Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose, Eve Austin, and additional actors Michelle Dockery, Geraldine James, David Dawson, and Nicholas Pinnock are part of the major cast.

BBC One aired the series premiere on March 31, 2024. In November 2020, Knight and producer Nick Angel began their collaboration. Production companies Kudos and Stigma collaborated with them on a project that focused on the early 1980s UK music scene.

In April 2022, BBC One decided to produce a six-part series based on this concept. November 2022 saw the start of filming in Birmingham, both downtown and at Knight’s Loc. Film and TV Studios.

Additionally, a race riot scene was staged in Wolverhampton for a few of the sequences. They posted an ad in the neighborhood music and news publications looking for extras to play skinheads. Filming was shifted to Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, in March 2023.

Is This Town Based on a True Story?

No, the narrative behind This Town isn’t real. The show’s characters and events are entirely made up; they are not based on actual persons or occasions. This Town is based on a fictional plot, although it accurately depicts actual events, such as the Handsworth riots of 1981.

Knight’s personal experiences throughout the 1980s in Birmingham and the Midlands served as inspiration. He based the plot on the evolution of ska and two-tone music, drawing inspiration from this.

The narrative takes place in Coventry and Birmingham in 1981. Numerous changes occurred in society, politics, and music throughout that time. Riot, the first incident in the story, took place in Handsworth, Birmingham.

The four characters who came together were introduced by the filmmaker through that riot. The setting of the story was influenced by Knight’s early years as he was developing throughout that time.

This Town Plot

The TV series centers on a band that formed in the 1980s after punk, two-tone, ska, and reggae became prominent. Poet Kae Tempest and record producer/songwriter Dan Carey are the authors of the songs the characters write.

This show centers on four young individuals who become involved in a vibrant music scene and a large family. It shows how a band sticks together in the face of violence and disarray. It illustrates that difficult times can inspire brilliant ideas.
