Ishan Kishan is one of Indian’s brightest young wicket-keeper batsmen presently playing in the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians. The Patna-born cricketer who plays for Jharkhand in domestic cricket has become a revelation since testing first-class cricket in 2014. Not much has he presently won in terms of awards and accolades but he has made a name for himself as  the youngest cricketer to score an ODI double century and the first to convert a maiden ODI century to a double century. He also won the player of the match award on his Twenty20 International (T20i) debut against fierce rivals England on 14 March 2021.

Who is Ishan Kishan?

Ishan Kishan was born on 18 July 1998 in Patna, Bihar, India to Pranav Kumar Pandey and Suchitra Singh. He has an older brother, Raj Kishan who is a doctor. Kishan’s father was into construction, as he worked as a builder.

The Kishan brothers grew up together in Patna where they both had interest and played cricket growing up. For some family reasons, the older sibling had to do away with cricket and focus on a different field.

Kishan plays for Jharkhand in domestic cricket since he there were registration issues between Bihar Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His performances since making his debut in 2014 has been spectacular.

During the 2016 IPL auction, Kishan was purchased by the Gujarat Lions who competed in the Indian Premier League. After two seasons, his services were acquired by the Mumbai Indians where he has been playing till date.

Ahead of the 2022 IPL auction, the Mumbai Indians paid ₹15.25 crore (US$2 million) to reacquire Kishan’s services. That figure was just below Yuvraj Singh’s value, becoming the second-most expensive Indian player.

Kishan’s performances for Jharkhand and the Mumbai Indians earned him a spot on the Indian national team squad for the Twenty20 International game against England. He made his T20i debut on 14 March 2021, winning the player of the match award.

On his 23rd birthday, Kishan made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Sri Lanka. A year later in December 2022, he became the “youngest cricketer to score an ODI double century and the first to convert a maiden ODI century to a double century.”
