Jack Squirek died on January 5, 2024. The Raiders Family is mourning the loss of Jack Squirek, who passed away on Friday” the team announced in a post via X (Twitter) on Saturday.

“Squirek played four years for the Raiders and was a central figure in one of pro football’s all-time great plays. With the Raiders leading Washington near halftime of Super Bowl XVII, Squirek intercepted a screen pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown to give the Silver and Black an insurmountable 21-3 lead in the eventual victory”

“He originally joined the Raiders as a second-round draft pick out of Illinois in 1982 and played 53 career games with the Raiders before finishing his career with the Miami. The thoughts and deepest condolences of the Raider Nation are with the Squirek family at this time”

Squirek played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini and was drafted by the then-Los Angeles Raiders out of Illinois in the second round of the NFL draft in 1982.

After spending his first four NFL seasons with Los Angeles (1982-85), Squirek appeared in two games for the Miami Dolphins during the 1986 campaign.

He played in 53 regular season games, 7 in the playoffs, over 4 seasons with the team, making 8 starts and recording 3 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and an interception.

Squirek won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1984. He spent his final season with the Dolphins and played two games before he stepped away from the game.
