Legally known as Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo, the R&B singer was born on March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles California in the United States of America to Dr. Karamo Chilombo and Christina Yamamoto. Being among the four children of her parents, Aiko has three half-siblings from her father’s side. One of her siblings also has a career in the entertainment industry as an R&B singer, and she is Mila J. She ventured into music at a very young age as a member of the R&B group, B2K where she w as a vocalist and as well appeared in their music videos. In order for her to get promoted and be exposed she was labeled as Lil’ Fizz’s cousin which was actually not true. Lil’ Fizz had already gained fame by then. Following the failure of releasing her debut album at that time, My Name Is Jhené (2003), she quit doing music for some time to focus on her education. 

She released a mixtape Sailing Soul(s) on her website JheneAiko.com, announcing her return to music. It featured top-notch artists like Drake, Kanye West, and Miguel. 

Aiko signed to the record label Artium Records, in 2012 and released the song 3:16 AM from the Sail Out album which was available on iTunes. Big Sean featured her on his hit song Beware. The song was on the chart of the US Billboard Hot 100. Performing on Canadian artist Drake’s Would You Like a Tour? concert made her famous internationally. 

In November 2013, the American rapper released the EP Sail Out, which was number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold 34,000 copies within a week. Her song The Worst, which was the third song in her album brought her breakthrough as she topped the chart on airplay Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and as well became the first female to get to that domain with a debut single since 2008. 

Subsequently, she released her albums, Chilombo, Trip, and Souled Out which bagged her three nominations in the Grammy Awards.
