John Hlophe Biography

Born on January 1, 1959, in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal, Hlophe pursued his education at the University of Natal, the University of Fort Hare, and Cambridge University. Before his judicial career, he lectured in law at the University of Transkei, South Africa. His judicial journey began in 1995 when, at the age of 36, he became the first black judge in the High Court in Cape Town. Notably, he was also the first full-time academic to be appointed as a High Court Judge. He assumed leadership of the court in 2000.

Several complaints against Hlophe were brought before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Despite controversies and criticism, the JSC’s decisions were often disputed and subject to legal challenges.

Ultimately, on February 21, 2024, Hlophe faced impeachment from his position as President of the Western Cape High Court.
