Who is Joseph Chean?
Joseph Chean is a former National Director of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Singapore who plays a very significant role in the world of Christian evangelism.
What happened to Joseph Chean?
Joseph Chean was reported dead on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, after he was tragically involved in a fatal accident in Istanbul Türkiye.
The 56-year-old Singaporean missionary was on his way to the airport when the taxi he was in collided with another car at about 10.20 am on Wednesday, according to Turkish media reports.
According to Youth With A Mission (YWAM), a Christian organization where Chean had served as national director for around 12 years, Chean passed away from his wounds while being transported to the hospital.
In Turkey, police are still conducting investigations. According to accounts, the automobile driver was not in a life-threatening state, but the cab driver had sustained serious injuries.
“We are in shock and grief at this moment, and together with his wife Kim, and two daughters Olivia and Ashley, we are mourning the loss of a very dear spiritual father, leader, mentor, brother, and friend”, the Youth With A Mission(YWAM) posted on its Facebook and Instagram page.
“We seek your prayers alongside us for the family, and your understanding as we handle condolences. To honor the family, we ask that you give them privacy to grieve and settle necessary matters,”
Pastor Jeff Chong, chairman of LoveSingapore also took to his Facebook page to pay his tribute to the deceased, saying; “There are few people I know who lived a life with such love for Jesus. And even fewer who have given up so much to follow His call. I was privileged to serve alongside him and witness his infectious passion firsthand.”
In 1997, Chean made his YWAM debut. According to the Christian magazine Salt and Light, he had previously served as a youth pastor at St. Andrew’s School from 1989 to 1997 and afterward as a chaplain’s assistant.
He was appointed national director of YWAM in 2012. It was earlier this year that he resigned from that position. In addition, Joseph Chean oversaw strategy at Antioch 21, LoveSingapore’s international missions division. A nationwide network of churches is called LoveSingapore.
Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to CNA’s inquiry by saying that it is providing Joseph Chean’s family with consular support.
