At the age of seven, Watkins began participating in a park league basketball. Arike Ogunbowale served as Watkins’ game model while she trained under Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy.
Watkins, a freshman at Windward School in Los Angeles, led her team to the regional final and the CIF Southern Section Open Division championship game with an average of 21 points and nine rebounds per game. The Los Angeles Times Player of the Year award went to her.
Sports Illustrated Kids awarded Watkins the 2020 SportsKid of the Year title. She averaged 27 points and 12 rebounds per game while a sophomore at Windward.
Watkins moved to the Los Angeles-based Sierra Canyon School as a junior. As a junior, she guided her team to a 30-2 record and the state championship in the Open Division.
Watkins won the titles of Ms. Basketball and California Gatorade Player of the Year with an average of 25 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. She garnered Player of the Year awards from the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News.
Averaging 27.3 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game as a senior, Watkins helped Sierra Canyon win the CIF Southern Section Open Division, finish 31-1, and advance to the regional championship.
In an 88-39 victory over Notre Dame High School on her senior night, she scored a career-high 60 points, the second-most points in a game in the history of the area.
Both the Gatorade National Player of the Year and the Naismith Prep Player of the Year awards went to Watkins. She was named California Gatorade Player of the Year, Ms. Basketball, and Player of the Year by the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News twice.
Watkins participated in the Nike Hoop Summit and the McDonald’s All-American Game, where she was named a co-MVP. According to ESPN, she was regarded as the top player in the 2023 class and a five-star recruit. She declared on November 15, 2022, that she would rather attend USC than accept offers from Stanford and South Carolina.
In her collegiate debut, Watkins scored 32 points in an unexpected 83–74 victory over AP No. 7 Ohio State on November 6, 2023. She surpassed Lisa Leslie in 1990 to set the USC record for most points in a freshman debut.
On November 13, Watkins led his team to a 93–42 victory over Le Moyne with 35 points. Nine days later, she led her team to a 71-70 victory over Penn State with 31 points and 12 rebounds.
Watkins’ three straight 30-point performances began with that one, tying Cheryl Miller for the longest run in program history. On January 14, 2024, Watkins defeated AP No. 2 UCLA 73–65 with 32 points and 10 rebounds.
On February 2, she defeated AP No. 4 Stanford 67-58 with a career-high 51 points and 11 rebounds. She surpassed Cherie Nelson’s 1989 USC single-game scoring record.
Watkins represented the United States and took home a gold medal from the FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Mexico in 2021. She won tournament MVP with a scoring average of 20 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.2 steals, and 3.7 assists per game.
Watkins was voted MVP of the 2022 FIBA Under-17 World Cup in Hungary after leading her team to victory and averaging 13.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.3 steals per game.
