At the 20th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, Toney was chosen by the New York Giants in the first round. June 4, 2021, saw the sign ing of a $13.7 million, four-year contract.

As soon as training camp began, Toney was added to the team’s COVID-19 reserve list. Only four receptions in his first three games was a disappointing start for him. With six catches for 78 yards in Week 4’s 27–21 overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints, Toney recorded a touchdown.

Toney had the best game of his short career in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys, breaking Odell Beckham Jr.’s Giants receiving record for a rookie with 10 catches for 189 yards. However, Toney was dismissed for punching Cowboys safety Damontae Kazee during the 44-20 loss.

Toney’s oblique injury caused him to miss four weeks of the season. Toney was once more placed on the COVID-19 list and reserve on December 13, 2021.

Toney finished the season with the second-most receiving yards on the Giants (420 on 39 receptions) despite playing in just 10 games.

In the second week of the 2022 season, Toney suffered a hamstring injury. He missed five Giants games as a result of the injury. He only had two receptions for zero yards (one for two yards, the other for –2) and no touchdowns before being traded.

On October 27, 2022, Toney was dealt to the Kansas City Chiefs for a third and sixth-round NFL Draft pick in 2023. Toney’s first NFL touchdown came against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.

With nine appearances throughout the regular season in 2022, Toney amassed 171 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns on 16 receptions.

Jordan Norwood held the record with a 61-yard punt return in Super Bowl 50, but Toney broke it in Super Bowl LVII with a 65-yard return in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs took the lead for the first time during the game thanks to a touchdown reception from Toney in the fourth quarter. The Philadelphia Eagles were defeated 38–35 by the Chiefs.

Toney suffered a torn meniscus during the first session of training camp, which required knee surgery in July. He was able to play again against the Detroit Lions in the season opener, though.

In the 20-21 defeat over the Lions, Toney had 1 reception for 1 yard and 1 carry for -1 yard. Two key throws that Toney dropped defined his game: the first bounced to Lions safety Brian Branch and went for a pick-six, and the second would have cleared the air for the Chiefs to set up a game-winning field goal if it had been caught.

At the conclusion of the game, Toney took full responsibility for the errors. Toney’s offside call late in the fourth quarter of a Week 14 game against the Buffalo Bills negated a play in which Travis Kelce crossed the field lateral to Toney for what would have been the game-winning touchdown with 1:12 left.

The Chiefs ultimately lost 20–17 in the contest. NFL referee Carl Cheffers informed reporters that while players are occasionally warned before being penalized for incorrect alignment at the line of scrimmage, Toney’s alignment was “beyond warning,” and that “certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid disagreed with the call following the game. Toney made headlines once more in a Week 15 game against the New England Patriots after bobbling a throw that led to an interception in the fourth quarter.

The error overshadowed the Chiefs’ 27-17 triumph, with Toney’s subpar season-long play grabbing the majority of the attention. Head coach Andy Reid defended Toney when asked about his feelings, saying he “wasn’t down on him.”
