Koltsov commenced his amazing career by playing with Junactva Minsk in the Belarusian 1st division during the 1997–1998 season. He was later recruited by the Severstal Cherepovets to play for the team in the following season.
His superb stick-handling skills and incredible speed earned him the moniker, “Russian Rocket II” as his skills and talent were compared to that of the former ice hockey player, Pavel Bure.
During the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first-round pick, 18th overall, Koltsov was drafted to the NHL in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
In the 2002–03 AHL season, he was a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He began playing full-time for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2003–04 season, appearing in 82 games and tallying nine goals and twenty assists.
He played for the Spartak Moscow Hockey team during the 2004-2005 NHL lockout. The next season saw Koltsov moving between Wilkes-Barre and Pittsburgh where he maintained his position until the end of the season attaining three goals and giving six assists.
In the 2002–03 AHL season, he was a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He began playing full-time for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2003–04 season, appearing in 82 games and tallying nine goals and twenty assists.
Koltsov would have joined the Salavat Yulaev Ufa squad that would defeat Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to capture the RSL League Title during the 2007-2008 RSL season.
However, at the beginning of the 2008–09 season, the RSL was absorbed into the newly established Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), making Salavat Yulaev Ufa the final RSL champion.
