Who is Mavado?

Mavado, birthed as David Constantine Brooks, grew up in Kingston, Jamaica’s Cassava Piece neighborhood. He credits Bounty Killer’s music as an early influence. Bounty took him under his wing and introduced him to his manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, to explain to him the ropes of the music industry. He chose the name “Mavado” after the Swiss watchmaker Movado, with his manager changing the spelling.

Mavado made his debut with the tune “Real McKoy” in 2005. He cemented his reputation with the follow-up single “Weh Dem a Do” on the Red Bull & Guinness riddim, which charted on Billboard. Following a streak of hits in 2005 and 2006, on July 10, 2007, Mavado released Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks on VP Records. The album’s track “Dying” was aggressively promoted on New York’s R&B/hip-hop radio station WQHT (Hot 97).

Mavado was detained by Jamaican authorities in the same year, causing an off-stage dispute. The singer alleges that while in police custody, he was thrown through a glass pane, severing three fingers that were reattached at a local hospital. Mavado allegedly fled from police custody while in the hospital. He was later arrested and charged with firing with purpose and illegal firearm possession in connection with an incident that occurred on July 27, 2007. Mavado was released two days later on $ 3,000 bail but was denied entry into the United States.
