Mavado, birthed as David Constantine Brooks (born 30 November 1980) is a Jamaican dancehall singer. Mavado is signed to We the Best Music Group and formerly to Cash Money Records.

He chose the name “Mavado” after the Swiss watchmaker Movado, with his manager changing the spelling.

Mavado made his debut with the tune “Real McKoy” in 2005. He cemented his reputation with the follow-up single “Weh Dem a Do” on the Red Bull & Guinness riddim, which charted on Billboard. Following a streak of hits in 2005 and 2006, on July 10, 2007, Mavado released Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks on VP Records. The album’s track “Dying” was aggressively promoted on New York’s R&B/hip-hop radio station WQHT (Hot 97).

Mavado was detained by Jamaican authorities in the same year, causing an off-stage dispute. The singer alleges that while in police custody, he was thrown through a glass pane, severing three fingers that were reattached at a local hospital. Mavado allegedly fled from police custody while in the hospital. He was later arrested and charged with firing with purpose and illegal firearm possession in connection with an incident that occurred on July 27, 2007. Mavado was released two days later on $ 3,000 bail but was denied entry into the United States.

Mavado was featured playing a rendition of his song “Real McKoy” for Grand Theft Auto IV] Trailer #4 “Everyone’s a Rat” in March 2008. “Real McKoy” and “Last Night” (both from the album ”Gangsta for Life”) were also broadcast on the radio station “Massive B Radio” in the game.

Mavado was beaten out by Sean Paul for the Best Reggae Artist category at the Soul Train Music Awards in November 2009. He was named Male Singjay of the Year by EME in 2010.

Mavado received the coveted UK MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act in 2008.

Mavado appeared as a thug on Drake’s song Find Your Love off his album Thank Me Later in April 2010.

In 2011, Mavado launched his own label, Mansion Records, with the single “Delilah.”
Along with Bounty Killer, he has mentioned 2Pac as a childhood favorite, drawing parallels between the late rapper’s life and his own.

Mavado collaborated with UK Grime musician Chipmunk on the song “Every Gyal” in 2011.

Mavado announced on the Angie Martinez show on New York’s Hot 97 radio station on September 1, 2011, that he had inked a deal with DJ Khaled’s record label We the Best Music Group. On We, the Best Music Group, Mavado released two singles, “Emergency” starring Ace Hood, and “Survivor” featuring Akon.

Mavado has revealed the first single off his next album. Part 2 of “For Jamaica, for the World” features DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, and Birdman.
