Movies churned out from Kumasi popularly called Kumawood continue to draw criticisms from the general public over their mediocre productions.

And despite the backlash, the industry is still vibrant and attracting their counterparts from the other divide referred to as Ghallywood.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Manso-Adubia constituency in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Yaw Addo, has called for the improvement of Kumawood, whilst challenging them to depart from the traditional witchcraft and ‘village-life’ stories which characterize their productions.

The legislator said:

“They need to move on and produce movies with contemporary ideas and story lines. But the contemporary issues being discussed today in movies is as good as when I was a little kid, where people are living in compound houses, village life, stories about witchcraft and these are the same old things they are doing in this 21st century.”
