Mike Freer career

In 1990, Freer defeated Labour to win the St. Paul’s ward seat on the Barnet Council for the first time. But in 1994, Labour reclaimed the seat from him, and in 1998, he lost in the East Finchley area as well.

In 2002, he won reelection to the council for the Church End ward. On May 11, 2006, he was unanimously chosen by his party to lead the council. Having served as Salinger’s deputy, he took over as Conservative group leader from Brian Salinger.

Freer ran in the nearby borough of Harrow’s Harrow West constituency in the 2005 general election. After the Labour incumbent Gareth Thomas’s majority was reduced from 6,000 to 2,000, he came in second.

In the general election of 2010, he was chosen to serve as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Finchley and Golders Green constituency. He was re-elected in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

After the 2015 general election, Freer was named Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Transport. He held this position until the 2017 general election.

Freer was appointed as an Assistant Government Whip on June 15, 2017. In the second Johnson cabinet, he was named Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in July 2018 and later advanced to Comptroller of the Household in December 2019.

During the cabinet reshuffle on September 16, 2021, Freer was named Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exports in the Department for International Trade.

He quit on July 6, 2022, citing his disapproval of Boris Johnson’s leadership. Johnson’s administration was accused by him in his resignation letter of “creating an atmosphere of hostility for LGBT+ people.”

He has served on the Work and Pensions, Scottish Affairs, and Housing, Communities, and Local Government committees in the House of Commons.

Freer belongs to the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) organization. In 2008, The Jewish Chronicle listed him as the 99th most influential person in the Jewish community, despite the fact that he is not Jewish.

A proposal by the Labour Party to modify the Parliament in January 2016 to force private landlords to make their houses “fit for human habitation” was met with failure.

Freer was one of 72 Conservative MPs who voted against the amendment and who personally received revenue from property rentals, according to Parliament’s register of interests.

Members of Muslims Against Crusades attacked Freer in October 2011 at a constituency surgery in a mosque in his Finchley constituency.

About 100 locals attended the crocus planting event that Freer held in October 2019 in remembrance of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust.

Following Ali Harbi Ali’s conviction in April 2022 for David Amess’ murder, Freer disclosed that he was informed by anti-terrorism police that Ali had paid a visit to his constituency office on September 17, 2021.

Freer’s district was the focus of a possible arson attack in December 2023. In January 2024, he declared his plan to resign in the upcoming general election, citing worries about Muslims Against Crusades, Ali Harbi Ali, and the arson attack on his constituency office as reasons for his concerns.
