Shannon graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in 1957 after attending Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic School for elementary school.

His senior year, he was named the Missouri High School Player of the Year in both basketball and football. He is still the only athlete to receive both honors in the same calendar year.

After enrolling at the University of Missouri and signing with St. Louis Card inals general manager Bing Devine, Shannon left in 1958 to start his professional baseball career.

Shannon, who thought he was a superior football player, has stated that he probably would have stayed in Missouri and pursued a professional football career if football players were paid more in his generation.

With the St. Louis Cardinals, Shannon started his major league career in 1962. He started out as the team’s regular right fielder in 1964 before switching to third base in 1967 (to make place for the recently acquired Roger Maris).

For the Cardinals, Shannon participated in three World Series. In Game 1 of the 1964 World Series against the New York Yankees, he hit a game-tying two-run home run off Whitey Ford, which St. Louis went on to win 9-5.

With 16 home runs and 64 RBI in 137 games, Shannon batted.288 in 1966. In July (.395, 7 HR, 23 RBI), he was selected NL Player of the Month.

He played the bat in 1968.He finished in seventh place in the voting for the MVP, behind Reds pitcher Pete Rose, teammates Bob Gibson, Curt Flood, and Lou Brock, as well as Giants Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal, with 266 in 156 games with 15 home runs and 79 RBI.

Shannon hit a home run off Gary Bell in the third game of the 1967 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.

Shannon’s solo home run off Mickey Lolich in Game 7 of the 1968 World Series against the Detroit Tigers was the only run the Cardinals scored off Lolich as the Tigers won the series.

In 1971, Shannon became a member of the Cardinals’ promotional staff; the following year, he transferred to the team’s radio booth.

On AM 1120 KMOX and the Cardinals Radio Network, Shannon worked alongside Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck for over three decades.

Shannon took over as the team’s principal radio voice after Buck passed away in 2002, working alongside Joel Meyers in 2002, Wayne Hagin from 2003 to 2005, and John Rooney from 2006 to 2021.

In 2006, he changed stations to KTRS (550), which now owned the station and had the Cardinals’ broadcasting rights.

Shannon went back to work for KMOX for the 2011 season after losing the broadcasting rights for the Cardinals.

For his work on Cardinal broadcasts, Shannon won a regional Emmy Award in 1985. In 1999, he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. In 2002 and 2003, he received the Missouri Sportscaster of the Year award.

Only home games were broadcast by Shannon for the Cardinals from 2016 until his retirement in 2021. Shannon made the announcement that the 2021 season, his 50th in the broadcast booth, will be his final on January 14, 2021. The Cardinals held a farewell ceremony for Shannon on October 3, 2021.
