Liverpool legend and pundit Jamie Carragher has described Mohammed Salah’s decision to be the 5th penalty taker at the grand finale of the 2021 AFCON to probably clinch the trophy for Egypt as madness.

Juxtaposed to Portugal’s decision to place Cristiano Ronaldo fifth against Spain at the Euros in 2012, Carragher believes the decision backfired, and had Mo Salah stepped up to take the penalty from the onset, a different story would have been told.

Like Ronaldo, Salah could only watch on as his team fell to defeat without him having a chance to participate in spot-kicks and this has hurt a lot of fans from Egypt.

Jamie tweeted shortly after the game saying;

“That is why your best penalty taker should never go fifth. Mo Salah not taking a penalty for Egypt in a shootout in a final is madness. Also happened to Ronaldo years ago for Portugal v Spain. #AFCON2021 #SENEGY.”
