Montez broke the combine record for a defensive lineman at the 2019 NFL Combine with a time of 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash. During his combined health examination, Sweat was also diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

However, it was quickly found that the incorrect cardiac measurement had led to a misdiagnosis. In the end, Sweat was chosen 26th overall by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

After selecting Dwayne Haskins with their first pick, the team moved back up into the first round to select him. On May 29, 2019, he agreed to a four-year rookie deal worth $11.6 million, which included a $6.4 million signing bonus.

Sweat recorded his first career sack in a 31-15 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 3 of Monday Night Football.

During a 47–16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17, Sweat sacked Dak Prescott twice, forcing a fumble that was recovered.

Late in the fourth quarter of a Thanksgiving game against the Dallas Cowboys, Sweat picked up a pass intended for Dalton and returned it 15 yards for a score, helping the Washington team win 41–16.

Sweat tipped a pass late in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers the next week, which resulted in an interception by Jon Bostic and helped the team overcome the then-unbeaten Steelers 23–17.

Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks threw a pass to Sweat in Week 15, but Daron Payne intercepted it.

During a Week 8 matchup with the Denver Broncos, Sweat sustained a fractured jaw and was placed on injured reserve. On December 8, 2021, he was added to the COVID-19 reserve list after testing positive.

He was removed from the COVID-19 list on December 18 and returned to the active roster the following two days. Against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15, Sweat forced a fumble on quarterback Jalen Hurts, which Landon Collins recovered. Sweat also recorded a sack.

The Commanders exercised Sweat’s contract’s fifth-year option on April 27, 2022. Two of the five sacks the Commanders had against the Tennessee Titans in Week 5 were attributed to Sweat.

In Week 11, he recorded two more sacks against the Houston Texans. Sweat was traded to the Chicago Bears on October 31, 2023, in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
