Freeman was a dancer at the 1964 World’s Fair and a performer with the San Francisco Opera Ring musical theater troupe. He performed in a touring production of The Royal Hunt of the Sun and was a background extra in Rod Steiger’s 1965 drama The Pawnbroker, directed by Sidney Lumet.

Between his dancing and acting gigs, Freeman discovered that acting was his true passion.

Before making his Broadway debut in 1968’s all-black production of Hello, Dolly!, which also starred Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway, Freeman made his Off-Broadway debut in 1967, appearing opposite Viveca Lindfors in The Nigger Lovers, a play about the Freedom Riders during the American Civil Rights Movement. He also appeared on stage in The Dozens in 1969.

In 1989, Freeman released four movies. He played Sergeant Major John Rawlins in the Edward Zwick film Glory, which was about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the second African-American regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Desson Thomson praised Freeman and co-star Denzel Washington in an article for The Washington Post for having a “warming sense of fraternity.”

In the comedy-drama Driving Miss Daisy, Freeman co-starred with Dan Aykroyd and Jessica Tandy. Freeman reprises his role as Hoke Colburn, a chauffeur for a Jewish widow, in the play by Alfred Uhry, in which he had previously appeared.
