Muhyiddin joined the Johor state public service as the assistant secretary of training and scholarship after finishing his studies. He was appointed Muar’s assistant district officer (ADO) in 1974.

He left the civil service to work in the corporate sector, managing subsidiaries such as Sergam Berhad as managing director (1974-1977), Equity Mal (Johore) Sdn Bhd as Director (1974-1978), Sri Saujana Berhad as managing director (1974-1978), and SGS Ates (M) Sdn Bhd as Human Resources Manager.

Muhyiddin’s political career began in 1971, when he joined UMNO as an ordinary member in the Muar Dalam division.

In 1976, he was elected as the Pagoh division’s UMNO youth chief and secretary. He later became the Johor state UMNO Youth Chief until 1987.

Muhyiddin was elected as the UMNO division chief of Pagoh in 1984, succeeding Othman Saat. Muhyiddin quickly rose through the ranks of Johor UMNO. He rose through the ranks of the Johor UMNO to become its leader and, later, Johor’s Menteri Besar. Muhyiddin ran for the Pagoh parliamentary seat again in the 1995 General Election.

He was the Minister of Youth and Sports (1995-1999), the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (1999-2004), the Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry (2004-2008), and the Minister of International Trade and Industry (2008–2009). In 2009, Prime Minister Najib Razak appointed him as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education.
