Earlier this year (in March), Foote resigned as SNP head of communications after being given misleading information by then-SNP chief executive Peter Murrell to provide to the media.
Per the information provided to the media, the party’s former head of communications suggested, that SNP’s membership was more than 100,000, when it was really around 72,000.
The above-mentioned misinformation led to Foote resigning from his position as head of communications of the party as well as Peter Murrell (SNP’s chief executive) stepping down in response to the scandal.
In an update of events, Murray Foote has been appointed as the new SNP chief executive. News of his appointment broke on the afternoon of Wednesday, 22nd August 2023.
Following his appointment, he replaces Peter Murrell who stood down after taking responsibility for misleading the media.
Welcoming Foote to his new role, SNP business convener and MP Kirsten Oswald said: “Murray was an exceptional candidate in a strong field.
“His managerial experience and skills will enable him to hit the ground running in delivering for SNP members, including leading changes in governance and transparency in party headquarters”
Foote said: “I am delighted to take up this important role and look forward to helping build the campaign for independence, both by strengthening the SNP’s headquarter functions and supporting the party’s formidable organization across Scotland”
Foote joined the SNP as the party’s head of communications and research at Holyrood in February 2020 before resigning in March 2023 amid the row over party membership numbers.
The Daily Record’s former editor, Foote will take up his new appointment on Monday, August 28, 2023.

The couple had been in a relationship since 2003. They got engaged on 29th January 2010 and tied the knot on 16th July 2010 at Oran Mor in Glasgow.
