Nick Bollettieri Children: Meet Giacomo, and Giovanni – Pelham Memorial High School was Nick Bollettieri’s alma mater. He graduated in 1949 as a charter member of the Omega Gamma Delta Fraternity’s Beta Lambda Chapter.
He earned a philosophy degree from Spring Hill College in 1953. He dropped out of the University of Miami Law School in 1956 after serving in the United States Army and rising to the rank of First Lieutenant.
Brian Gottfried was one of Bollettieri’s first students. Despite having only dabbled in tennis in high school, Bollettieri was the tennis director at the Rockefeller-owned Doral Beach Hotel in Puerto Rico in the late 1960s.
Bollettieri moved to Longboat Key, Florida, in 1978 to work as an instructor at the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. Bollettieri established the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (NBTA) near Bradenton, Florida in the early 1980s on 40 acres in unincorporated Manatee County on Florida’s west coast, about fifty miles south of Tampa.
International Management Group (IMG) purchased the tennis academy from Bollettieri in 1987, seeing it as a model for other sports. However, Bollettieri continued to manage and play an important role in the development of the tennis academy and ancillary programs.
Bollettieri continued his teaching and public speaking engagements around the world, including a visit to Tri-State Athletic Club in Evansville, Indiana, to teach students.
He was also the Tennis magazine’s instruction editor. Bollettieri wrote two memoirs during his life: My Aces, My Faults with Dick Schaap in 1996 and Bollettieri: Changing the Game in 2014.
Bollettieri also wrote Bollettieri’s Tennis Handbook, a 2001 instructional book that covers everything from stroke techniques and strategies to skill development and physical and mental conditioning.
He was also featured in the Nick Bollettieri DVD Collection, a set of ten instructional DVDs covering a variety of practice methods.
Monica Seles, Jim Courier, and Andre Agassi were among the first Bollettieri students to reach the top spot. Later, while working with Bollettieri, Marcelo Ros rose to the top.
The Williams sisters have a long history with Bollettieri, having visited the academy for years and frequently preparing for Grand Slams there.
The academy also served as a training ground for Mary Pierce and Anna Kournikova. Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovi are two of Bollettieri’s most recent students. Max Mirnyi was the world number one in men’s doubles after training with Bollettieri for 17 years.
While traveling as a tour coach, Bollettieri’s most famous coaching roles were with Andre Agassi from 1986 until Bollettieri ended the arrangement following the 1993 Wimbledon tournament, and with Boris Becker from December 1993 to August 1995.
It is on record that Bollettieri was awarded an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters. He got the award from the New York College of Health Professions. He got the award due to his contributions to the world of sports, fitness, and wellness.
He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2014. Bollettieri was the first white man to be inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame the following year.
