The Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Professor Abraham Annan says the use of ordinary alcohol should not be used as substitute for hand sanitizers against the COVID-19.

He has issued a warning to the general public against the use of ordinary alcohol as hand sanitizers.

According to Professor Annan, the wrong use of alcohol to combat the virus could rather increase one’s chances of contracting the Coronavirus. He has therefore advised against the use of ordinary alcohol as substitute for hand sanitizers.

He mentioned that even though alcohol may be a good disinfectant, it needs to be prepared and used with the right structured requirements. “… before the alcohol is used, we prepare it in a certain way. We first of all, will use water that is distilled or de-iodinized. We won’t use tap water or any water to prepare the alcohol for disinfection in the laboratory,” he said in an interview on GTV on Sunday, March 15.

Prof Annan further explained that when alcohol is used in the wrong way, it attracts potential germs on the hands which also includes the COVID-19.

Professor Abraham Annan has however advised the regular washing of hands under running water with soap.
