Majority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu has clarified that he never said a non-Akan should lead the party in the 2024 elections for which reason he has been buried under an avalanche of criticisms by party members.

Recall that a group calling itself Concerned Northern Grassroots of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) asked the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs to resign from the party over his recent utterances relative to who leads the party in 2024.

The group was incensed that the leading NPP member could say no Akan should be given the flagbearership slot leading to the 2024 general elections. Osei Kyei-Mensah suggested that the NPP elects a flagbearer who is non-Akan to lead them into election 2024 because it had had two Akan leaders in John Agyekum Kufour and President Akufo-Addo.

However, in a fresh interview, he said his comments were in relation to claims that he is one of the likely candidates to lead the party and whether he was ready to lead the party in 2024.

“Even though I believe I have the competence to contest, during serious introspection I believe the time is not right for me to say I can succeed a third succession Akan . . . I’ve not said anywhere that an Akan can not lead the party,” he said on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show.
