Grayson played for Yorkshire for five years beginning in 1990, where he made his first-class debut. He joined Essex after being released in 1995, and in his first season—1996—he received his county cap.

On BBC Radio Essex, he frequently spoke during County Championship and CB40 matches. By mutual accord, Grayson departed Essex in August 2015.

On September 30, 2015, it was revealed that he will become the next coach at Durham MCC University.

On February 3, 2017, Grayson was given a two-year deal to lead the Yorkshire Diamonds. Between 22 January 2019 to 3 December 2021, he worked as a batting coach for Yorkshire Cricket. He is the brother of Simon Grayson, a former manager and professional player.
