He developed a passion for music at a younger age, was consistent throughout his career, and rose to become one of the most sought-after musicians.

Robertson began playing guitar at the age of 10, and six years later joined Levon Helm (drummer) in the Hawks, the backing band for rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins.

The Hawks began backing Dylan in 1965 after the iconic folk musician went electric. In 1967, the group changed its name to simply The Band.

He’s best known for his work as lead guitarist for Bob Dylan in the mid-late 1960s and early-mid 1970s; as guitarist and songwriter with the Band from their inception until 1978, and for his career as a solo recording artist.

Robertson’s work with the Band was instrumental in creating the Americana music genre. As a songwriter, he’s credited with writing several songs both as a solo artist and with the band.

With the band, he’s credited with writing; The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and Up on Cripple Creek and had solo hits with Broken Arrow and Somewhere Down the Crazy River, and many others.

Robertson was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Songwriters.

He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of the Band and was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, both with the Band and on his own.

As a film soundtrack producer and composer, Robertson is known for his works with director Martin Scorsese in film and television, which began with the rockumentary film The Last Waltz.

The duo worked on a number of films; Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Casino, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He worked on many other soundtracks for film and television.

Sadly, the five-time Grammy nominee and celebrated songwriter, singer, guitarist, and film composer has died. Robbie Robertson passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the age of 80, after a long illness.

A statement from his family read: “Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, including his wife, Janet, his ex-wife, Dominique, her partner Nicholas, and his children Alexandra, Sebastian, Delphine and Delphine’s partner Kenny.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Angelica, Donovan, Dominic, Gabriel and Seraphina.” In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to “support a new Woodland Cultural Center”.

Robbie Robertson had married twice at the time of his death.

On March 24, 1968, Robertson married Dominique Bourgeois, a Canadian journalist. In a statement released by his family to announce his demise, Dominique was mentioned as Robertson’s ex-wife.

This means the late musician and his Dominique Bourgeois divorced. However, the reason and the date of their separation are unknown at this time of writing.

Following their separation, Robertson in March 2000 became engaged to his girlfriend of four years, Janet Zuccarini, a Canadian entrepreneur, restaurateur, and Top Chef Canada judge.

Less than five months before Robertson’s death, the musician and Zuccarini were married, which was shared on her (Zuccarini’s) Instagram account.
