In 2001, S Club Juniors was established as a spinoff of the reality show S Club Search. The management group that had formed S Club 7 and held auditions for S Club Juniors, 19 Entertainment, then decided that they would open for every show on the tour as a support act.

S Club Juniors gained popularity at the end of the tour, and with 19’s assistance, Polydor Records signed them. They released “One Step Closer” as their debut song.

The UK release of the single on April 22, 2002, pitted it against the Sugababes, who also released their return single on the same day. The track was supported by the television series S Club Junior: The Story.
