Powell died on Monday, January 15, 2024, at the age of 32. His former college football teammate, Junior Galette announced the news on social media on Tuesday but did not mention the cause of death making it unknown whether he battled any form of illness or died in an accident.

In an Instagram post, Galette wrote; “I Can’t even believe that I am making this post right now but please hug your Loved ones I LOVE YOU Forever till we meet again an EXCELLENT FATHER Respected Brother and a Loving Son I am saddened to share with the rest of the world that Ronald Powell Transitioned Earlier today. REST IN POWER RONALD POWELL”

Born in 1988, Powell developed a passion for playing American football at a younger age and was consistent throughout his career, becoming one of the most sought-after outside linebackers

Powell eventually joined the Florida Gators as a five-star recruit out of high school and was the No. 1 prospect in the 2010 class from Rancho Verde High School in California.

He spent three seasons at Florida from 2010 to 2013, playing in 53 games with 79 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks. He declared for the draft in 2014 after the conclusion of his junior season.

Powell was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. He played in 14 games as a rookie but was placed on injured reserve at the beginning of the 2015 season and waived.

He spent time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears practice squads in 2015 and 2016 and was briefly with the Seattle Seahawks before they released him in training camp in 2017.

Powell also had brief spells with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, and Chicago Bears but never played in the NFL again after leaving New Orleans.

He finished his professional career with the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football before the league ceased operations in 2019.

In a tribute, the NFLPA Former Players account wrote on X; “Today we mourn the loss of Ronald Powell — a father, a brother, and a son who was loved and cherished by so many. We send comfort to all those who knew Ronald. #RIP”

“We’re very saddened to learn about the passing of former Gators player Ronald Powell. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones,” the school said via the Florida Gators Football account on X.
