Steve Aoki grew up in Newport Beach, California after being born in Miami, Florida. In 1995, he graduated from Newport Harbour High School, where he was a member of the varsity badminton team. He is the third child of Rocky Aoki and Chizuru Kobayashi of Japanese origin. His father was a former wrestler who also started the Benihana restaurant brand. He has two older siblings, Kana (often referred to by her middle name “Grace”) and Kevin (owner of Doraku Sushi restaurant). Devon Aoki, a model and actress, is his half-sister.

Aoki earned two B.A. degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara, one in women’s studies and the other in sociology. In college, he made DIY records and organized underground concerts from his Biko room in the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative, which was located in Isla Vista, a residential neighborhood adjacent to UCSB. The flat became known as The Pickle Patch as a concert venue.

In 2007, he was named BPM Magazine’s Best Party Rocker DJ, Paper Magazine’s Best DJ of the Year, and the Ibiza Awards’ Best Set of the Season. In early 2015, he was named a Best Buddies Global Ambassador, a non-profit organization dedicated to young people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
