Brazilian professional footballer, Thiago Emiliano da Silva was born on September 22nd, 1984 in Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

He was born to Angela Maria da Silva and Geraldo Emiliano da Silva. He shares the same parents with his brother, Erivelton Emiliano da Silva and his sister, Danila Emiliano da Silva.

Silva attended a school in Rio’s Campo Grande neighborhood when he was younger that also served as a feeder school for Fluminense.

During a friendly in Xerém at the age of 14, Silva dazzled Fluminense coach Mourinho. During his brief tryout, he was assigned to play defensive midfield.

Due to his limited playing opportunities, Silva looked about joining other clubs. At the age of 15, Silva tried out for Madureira, Olaria, and Flamengo in 1999. He was turned down by each club, with the trial at Flamengo being the most challenging for him because coaches didn’t even see him play.

A minor Brazilian club in the lower leagues named Barcelona, which represents Silva’s city, signed him. Silva participated in a showcase competition the next year in So Paulo in an effort to catch the eye of bigger clubs.

He was there when Paulo César Carpegiani noticed him and invited him to join RS Futebol in the southern region of Brazil. Silva joined the team at the end of 2001, turning professional in 2002. He competed in the Campeonato Gacho’s third tier, placing second and earning promotion to the state’s second division.

In 2004, Silva transferred to Juventude and played there for six months. Under the guidance of Ivo Wortmann, Silva switched from midfield to defense at the age of 20.

He was named to the season’s best team and ranked third best defender in Brazil by the sports publication Placar. During Silva’s tenure at the club, Juventude advanced significantly in the league standings, moving from finishing 18th with 53 points in 2003 to 7th with 70 points in 2004.

Silva was sold to Porto because his exceptional performances drew the attention of numerous clubs. Silva was acquired by Porto in 2004 for €2.5 million, however he only appeared for the reserve squad.

After spending a year in Portugal, he joined Dynamo Moscow, where he received a tuberculosis diagnosis and spent six months in the hospital.

Silva played center defense for Chelsea of the Premier League and led the Brazil national team. He is considered as one of the greatest defenders of all time and is famous for his defensive prowess, discipline, and leadership.

At the age of 19, Silva signed a contract with Porto, went on loan to Dynamo Moscow, and was hospitalized with a TB infection that was almost fatal. In 2002, he began his professional club career with RS Futebol as a midfielder before converting to a defensive position when playing for Juventude.

After recovering, he joined Fluminense and took home a Copa do Brasil. For an estimated €8 million, Silva moved to AC Milan in 2009, where he went on to win the Serie A. He won seven Ligue 1 championships, six Ligue Cups, and five Coupes de France, and advanced to the 2020 UEFA Champions League Final there. Silva is the club’s all-time longest-serving captain and has made the eighth-most appearances overall.

He joined Chelsea in 2020 on a free transfer, and during his debut campaign with the team, he won the UEFA Champions League. At the age of 23, Silva made his senior international debut for Brazil in 2008. Since then, he has gained over 100 caps and participated in eight major competitions.

He was the captain as Brazil won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and placed fourth at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics. Silva later contributed to his nation’s 2019 Copa América victory.
