In a sad report, a 70-year old grandma has revealed how she and her 3 orphaned grandchildren go on empty stomachs for days with food due to abject poverty.
The septuagenarian who spoke to Crime Check Foundation revealed that the parents of the kids died six years ago in an accident on the Suhum-Nkawkaw road.
The old woman identified as Mary Marku has been single-handedly catering for these three kids for six years now.
As that wasn’t enough, fire gutted the house of Mary Marku, forcing herself and the kids to live in a roofless container for some time.
These three kids, all boys, 15, 13 and 6 years have been solely depending on the old woman and most of the time had to get food on credit.
“I have credited foodstuff to the extent that foodstuff vendors now run away from us in the area”, she noted.
Additionally, she stated that they had to fast all because her debtors refuse to give them food on credit.
According to the woman, on some difficult days, she prays over water for the kids to drink as food.
“Most times they refuse to sell to us on credit and in times like that, we fetch water, pray over it and drink but on good days, I buy 1cedi banku and divide it into four so we all share” – Mary Marku tearfully indicated.
