She was born on the Singleton Plantation’s property owned by her grandmother. Her mother worked as a maid, a factory worker, and a housewife, while her father was a horse trainer.

She is the second youngest of six children, including a brother and four sisters. Her parents left her other siblings with her grandparents and shortly after she was born, they relocated to Central Falls, Rhode Island, with Davis and two of her elder brothers.

Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, her mother was also an activist. Davis’ mother was arrested at a civil rights rally when she was two years old, and they were both transported to prison.

She has claimed that she “lived in abysmal poverty and disorder” as a youngster and recalled having lived in “rat-infested and condemned” flats.
