The Minister of Finance, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta has indicated that the controversial Electronic Levy (E-Levy) will be reviewed soon.

This comes after the government failed to meet its targets after several months after the levy was implemented.

Speaking to the media in a recent submission in Accra, the minister stated that the review of the E-levy forms part of measures to help improve the government’s domestic revenue mobilization.

In his submission, he said;

“Such exercises form part of an ongoing drive to ensure we take significant steps forward in remedying long-standing challenges with domestic revenue mobilization, indiscipline, corruption, and leakages.

Of course, heightened tax compliance and increased tax audit exercises will continue to be complemented by policy initiatives that allow us to tap into a wider pool of taxpayers in the years ahead.

Towards this therefore we are looking at areas around the E-Levy to ensure its efficient implementation.”

Before its implementation, Ghanaians kicked against the idea as many people believed that it was pure thievery for government to tax an amount more than once.

This made way for people to devise means of bypassing paying the levy during various electronic transfers, hence the abysmal performance of the levy after it was implemented.
