Santa Rosa de Lima is the patron saint of Peru and all of South America as well as of embroiderers, gardeners, and florists. The national holiday in Peru is always celebrated on August 30, to commemorates Saint Rose of Lima who passed away on August 24, 1617.

Santa Rosa (de Lima), often known as Saint Rose of Lima, was the first person born in the Americas to be declared a Catholic saint. She lived from April 20, 1586, until August 24, 1617. She adopted the name Rose after her confirmation in 1597. She was born in Lima, Peru, in 1586, and began mortifying herself at an early age, upsetting her parents in the process but focusing her undivided attention on God.

She was motivated to adopt Saint Catherine of Siena as her role model after reading a biography of the saint. Three times a week at first, she began to fast. A spiked ring was placed on her skull, she shaved off her hair, wore a “hair shirt” over her body, and she added secret terrible penances. She subsequently increased the severity of her penances in secret, chopped off her hair, wore a spiky ring on her head and “hair shirt” on her body, and even deformed her face. Many of these actions were carried out against her parents’ wishes and in defiance of her friends’ mockery. She found comfort in receiving the Eucharist every day.

She was born as Isabel Flores de Oliva in the city of Lima, then of the Viceroyalty of Peru, on 20 April 1586. She was one of 11 children of Gaspar Flores, a flintlock operator of the Imperial Spanish Army whose family was originally from Baños de Montemayor, Cáeres, Spain and later to Puerto Rico María de Oliva y Herrera a criolla of Lima origin. Her maternal grandparents were Francisco de Oliva and Isabel de Herrera. Rose’s siblings are Gaspar, Bernardina, Hernando, Francisco, Juana, Antonio, Andrés, Francisco and Jacinta, all born in Lima.

As a young girl, following the example of Catherine of Siena, the famous Dominican third class student, she began to fast three times a week and perform strict penances in secret. When admired for her beauty, Rose would cut her hair and rub chili peppers on her face, upset that men were starting to notice her. She turned down all suitors over the objections of friends and family. Despite parental censorship, she spent many hours contemplating the Eucharist she received daily, an extremely rare practice at the time.

She vowed to keep her virginity, but her parents opposed her because they wanted her to get married. Finally, out of frustration, her father gave her a private room in the family house. After the daily fasting period, she permanently abstained from eating meat. She helps the sick and hungry in her community, taking them to their rooms and taking care of them. Rose sold her beautiful needlework and brought the flowers she grew to the market to help support her family. She made and sold lace and embroidery to cure the poor, and at the same time she prayed and repented in a small cave she built. On the contrary, she became a recluse, leaving her room only to go to church.

She attracted the attention of the Dominicans. She wanted to become a nun, but her father forbade her, so she joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic while living at her parents’ house. In her twentieth year, she put on the Third Order and made a lifelong vow of virginity. She only allows herself to sleep for a maximum of two hours a night in order to have more time for prayer. She wears a heavy silver crown, with small thorns inside, simulating the crown of thorns worn by Christ.

For eleven years she lived like that, with trances, and finally died on August 24, 1617, at the age of 31, after a long illness. It is said that she prophesied the day of her death. Her funeral took place in the cathedral, in the presence of all the public authorities of Lima. Her feast day is August 23 (August 30 according to the traditional calendar).

On the last weekend of August, the Fiesta de Santa Rosa is held in Dixon, New Mexico, and the Sint Rosa Festival in Sittard, Limburg, Netherlands. Also, in Sibbe, Limburg, Netherlands, a pylon dedicated to Saint Rose was erected on the first Saturday after August 23 by the local Jonkheid.

Baron Sainte Rose de Lima was established in the Royal Rwandan Government on 25 July 2016 by the Catholic monarch in exile, King Kigeli V of Rwanda. Maywood, California is home to the largest parish dedicated to Saint Rose.
