His parents were Hyman Kotkin, the owner of Korby’s, a men’s haberdashery in Warren, New Jersey, and Rebecca Kotkin, an insurance adjuster. Rebecca Kotkin was born in Jerusalem, while David’s paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from the Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine). David completed his high school education at Metuchen High School in 1974.
