Roisin Murphy is an Irish singer, songwriter and record producer who rose to prominence in the 1990s as one half of the pop duo Moloko alongside British musician Mark Brydon.
After Moloko broke up, Roisin Murphy embarked on a solo career and released her first solo album Ruby Blue in 2005 to critical acclaim. With a unique blend of electronic and pop influences, Roisin Murphy has created a distinctive sound that sets her apart from other artists.

When she was 12 years old, she and her family moved to England, where they settled in Manchester. She adopted 1960s fashion by accompanying her mother, an antiques dealer, to garage sales and charity shops. After living in Manchester for three years, her parents divorced and both returned to Ireland.
However, Roisin Murphy, 15, was determined to stay in England alone because she didn’t think her mother was strong enough to continue to care for her. She lived with her best friend for a year until she was able to get housing allowance and moved into an apartment nearby.
Roisin Murphy met Mark Brydon in 1994 at a party, using the chat line “Do you like my tight sweater?” Let’s see how it fits my body. Brydon took Murphy to his Fon Studios, where he auditioned on tape, and I love Murphy’s theatrical performance. They started dating and the newly formed Moloko signed with Echo Records, releasing her debut album Do You Like My Tight Sweater?
Although no official statement was made about Moloko’s future, Roisin Murphy told Q magazine in May 2005, “We left him on good terms after a very successful tour. She said “We left it on good terms after a very successful tour. We shook hands, said “see you later”, and haven’t spoken since. I don’t know what Mark thinks of this record or what he’s doing. I don’t know if we will or we won’t reunite. Myself, I don’t not want to.”
Roisin Murphy began her solo career while still at Moloko, which included her contributions to the work of other artists, including Handsome Boys Kindergarten and Boris Dlugosch, with whom she sang for the anthem. “Never Enough”, which became a huge hit for the club, reaching its peak at top three on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart.
In May 2006, Roisin Murphy signed with EMI. Her first single for the label, “Overpower”, was released on July 2, 2007; written by Murphy and Paul Dolby (Seiji) of Bugz in the Attic and mixed by Tom Elmhirst, this single goes accompanied by a series of remixes by Seamus Haji, Kris Menace, Hervé and Loose Cannons. The second single “Let Me Know” (featuring Andy Cato) was released in September and an album titled Overpower was released shortly thereafter.
Despite the celebrity problems at EMI, Roisin Murphy returned to work with Sejii on her third solo studio album. In 2008, she recorded a cover of Bryan Ferry’s song “Slave to Love” in an advertising campaign for Gucci and released it on the promotional single “Movie Star”.
Roisin Murphy previewed the material at the SEone club in London in 2009, performing “Momma’s Place” and “Hold up Your Hands”, and released the single “Orally Fixated” on her Myspace site in November 2009. In May 2014, Roisin Murphy released a six-song EP in Italian, Mi Senti, which included the new lineup and previous Italian pop hits. Her third studio album Hairless Toys was released a year later to generally positive reviews.
Throughout 2018, The Vinyl Factory released a series of four 12-inch discs produced by Baltimore home music pioneer Maurice Fulton. Consisting of eight original songs, each approximately six minutes long, Roisin Murphy directed the music videos for all four A-side releases.
In March 2023, Roisin Murphy announced her signing to Ninja Tune with the single “CooCool”, produced by DJ Koze. She collaborated with artist Beth Frey and photographer Connor Egan on the cover for “CooCool”. On May 17, 2023, Roisin Murphy released the single “The Universe” and announced her sixth solo album Hit Parade, scheduled for release on September 8, 2023.
Roisin Murphy once dated British artist Simon Henwood; they had a daughter together and is currently in a relationship with Italian producer Sebastiano Properzi. They have a son.
