Following the alleged murder of two women by a police officer who was dating them, the Social Development Department of South Africa has urged women to walk out of unhealthy relationships.

According to reports, Sithembile Ngobese, 23, and Enhle Majozi, 18, were killed by Mlungisi Blessing Sikhakhane, a police officer, who was identified as being 27 years old.

The incident happened early on Friday, October 14, 2022 in Mandela Park, KwaNyuswa, west of Durban. On Monday, October 17, 2022, the Hillcrest SAPS officer made a brief appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court to request bail.

The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the officer is a constable.

“He faces two counts of murder and was remanded in police custody to appear in court on October 26 for a formal bail application, said NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

Bilo Ntombela, the interim chief director of the eThekwini department of social development cluster, claimed that on Monday, protesters had gathered in front of the court to show their support for the victims and their families.

“We want justice for these two women, we will continue to raise awareness on gender-based violence. We have observed that the more we raise awareness the more we see the violence escalate, I also want to encourage women to leave toxic relationships,” Ntombela said.

According to early reports, Sikhakhane shot the two ladies on October 14 in a rear room he was renting in KwaNyuswa, close to Hillcrest.
