Simons was born in Amsterdam, the son of former Dutch footballer Regillio Simons. Simons is of Surinamese descent through his father, and he shares a birthday with his older brother Faustino (born 1996), who also played football.

Simons joined Barcelona’s youth setup from CD Tháder in 2010 and quickly advanced to become one of the Spanish club’s most highly rated youth players. At one point, English club Chelsea as well as Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid reportedly attempted to sign him at a young age.

Simons joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in July 2019 after failing to reach an agreement with Barcelona on a new contract. His three-year contract with the Paris club was said to be worth up to €1 million per year.

Simons made his PSG debut as a substitute for Julian Draxler in a 1-0 Coupe de France victory over Caen.
