Yo Gotti was raised in Memphis, Tennessee’s Frayser area at the Ridgecrest Apartments. At the age of 14, he started his musical career as Lil Yo, a rapper associated with DJ Sound and his group.

Yo Gotti put out many independent albums between 2000 and 2006, including From Da Dope Game 2 Da Rap Game (2000), Self-Explanatory (2001), Life (2003), and Back 2 da Basics (2006).

November 2021 was supposed to be the release date of Gotti’s eleventh studio album, CM10: Free Game, however, the album was postponed for unspecified reasons. In the end, it was made available in February 2022. This double-disc album is made up of the “Free” and “Game” discs.

Privé Restaurant was the scene of a shooting in Memphis, Tennessee on March 29, 2023. Gotti bought the establishment for his mother.
